Where and when are these events happening?
1. What is this event?
We know admissions interviews are an important part of applications to Oxford and Cambridge.
At this event, our volunteers will be helping our access students with their interview skills. Volunteers will help students to understand the skills admissions tutors are looking for, and help them develop techniques to approach difficult interview questions.
We do not believe in coaching, nor in helping students rote learn answers to use in their interviews. There is no such a thing as a perfect interview or candidate, and students do best when their answers are genuine and individual.
Instead, our overall aim for the event is for students to leave with a greater awareness of the skills involved in the interview stage of their application.
2. Who are OxFizz?
OxFizz is a social enterprise which exists to bridge gaps in the education system, ensuring that all students have fair access to top universities.
We know even when disadvantaged students achieve the same grades as their peers, they are still less likely to win places at top universities. We exist to level the playing field – ensuring students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds can freely access a programme of support to build the knowledge, confidence and skills to make successful applications to top universities.
We do this on a cross-subsidy model, working across the education sector. Where families and schools are fortunate enough to be able to pay for these services we charge a fee. This work in the private education sector allows us to generate profits, and crucially expertise, to make the same services available free of charge to students from much less advantaged backgrounds.
3. What are we looking for?
We’re looking for recent graduates from top universities who are passionate about supporting the next generation of students. We welcome volunteer sign ups from a range of subject backgrounds.
Our workshop leaders will:
Receive our full workshop outlines and volunteer guidance in advance
Deliver workshops focused on interview skills and/or personal statements
Work with students in your subject area, and help them to leave the workshops with clear plans and goals for their university preparation going forward
Workshops will generally be in small group sizes of 8 -12, though with popular subjects like Medicine or Engineering the group sizes may be larger.
OxFizz staff will be there on the day to observe different workshops and support you to deliver the sessions.
4. Where and when are these events happening?
The venue for this event is the Ark central offices in Holborn.
This is a 3 minute walk from Holborn underground station, which is on the Piccadilly and Victoria line.
The workshop will run from 5 - 7pm. Our volunteering coordinator James Tibbles will be running this event.
