1. Introduction

On this day, our volunteers will be helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds choose the university subject they’re going to apply for.

OxFizz has a fast-growing access programme, helping to widen participation to Oxford, Cambridge, and other top universities. Last year we trebled the amount of access support we were able to offer, and over this coming year we’ll be supporting an even larger group of students.

This is the first event of our 2019 access schedule. After students have chosen their subjects, we’ll be supporting them with mock tutorials, mock admission tests, and eventually mock admission interviews.

Volunteers often tell us how rewarding these days are, and enjoy meeting the students they’ll go on support later in their application journey.

2. Overview of the day

On this day our volunteers will be running short ‘taster’ sessions with small groups of students

  • With our guidance and support, volunteers will prepare and deliver short 30 minute sessions with small groups of students

  • During these sessions, volunteers will share their university experiences, and run a quick ‘taster’ activity in the subject. This could be e.g. a debate, a source-based task, or a problem question.

  • Students will rotate around volunteers throughout the day, seeing the full range of different courses they can apply for.

Our aims for this day are for students to gain awareness of courses they may not have encountered before (especially those specific to Oxbridge!); gain experience of the subjects they’re interested in before focusing in their application; and to have met Oxbridge graduates, and walk away more informed about what studying at Oxbridge is like.

3. What we're looking for

We're looking for enthusiastic graduate volunteers from across the whole range of subjects studied at Oxford and Cambridge.

Please do be aware that volunteer places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
