About Us
What we do
We ensure that students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds can freely access a programme of support to build the knowledge, confidence and skills to make successful applications to top universities.
How we do this
We do this on a cross-subsidy model, working across the education sector. We deliver exceptional quality educational services through our two brands Oxbridge Interviews and Oxbridge International Summer School.
Where families and schools are fortunate enough to be able to pay for these services we charge a fee. This work in the private education sector allows us to make the same services available free of charge to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
We do this in partnership with some of the UK’s leading widening participation charities and multi-academy trusts, including The Access Project, IntoUniversity, Target Oxbridge, Villiers Park and Harris and Ark academies.
Our services are delivered by our network of 200+ graduate volunteers. This extremely talented group of mostly Oxbridge and medicine graduates give their time over summers and weekends because they enjoy sharing their academic passions with the next generation of motivated and intelligent students. They can also choose to have some of their tuition revenue donated to a cause they support, including our very own access programme.
Why we exist
OxFizz exists to bridge gaps in the UK’s education system, ensuring all students have fair access to top universities.
We know that even when disadvantaged students achieve the same grades as their peers, they are still less likely to win places at top universities.
Combined with wider inequalities in our education system, this means an 18-year-old from the disadvantaged quintile has a 1 in 50 chance of going to university; versus 1 in 4 in the most advantaged quintile.
Not only is this a problem for these students – thousands miss out on this key route to social mobility each year – but it deprives universities (and the industries that recruit from them) a key pool of talent. As a result, many of these institutions remain stubbornly unrepresentative of the population as a whole.
Our impact to date
Since being founded by a group of students in 2007, we have engaged over 500 graduates in volunteering, donated over £900,000 to education programmes and other good causes, and supported over 3000 students with their university applications.
Our plans for the future
It’s an exciting moment for OxFizz. Now we know we have an access programme that young people are engaging with, our next job is to drive quality and to better understand the differences we are making for young people.
In 2018 we tripled the size of our access programme, and delivered 50% of our services pro-bono. In 2019 we increased our programme by 70%, delivering three free hours of support for every paying hour sold.
In 2020 we will expand our programme further, whilst focusing on quality and impact.
