Interviewing in: Economics

Background on subject

Economics studies how consumers, firms and governments make decisions that together determine how resources are allocated. It involves ideas and techniques from Mathematics, Statistics, History, Politics and Sociology.

Cambridge offers a straight course in Economics, where students are introduced to the basics in first year - like micro and macroeconomics, and the social, political and historical aspects of the subject - before specialising in their second and third years.

In Oxford, you must study Economics in combination with another subject: Economics and Managagement E&M), Engineering, Economics and Management (EEM), Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE), or History and Economics.

Can I interview in this subject?

You do not have to have studied Economics at university to give a robust and rigorous practice interview in this subject.

Volunteers from the following subjects, or similar, will also be able to deliver Economics interviews:

Interview types

There are two different types of practice interviews in Economics, which you may be asked to deliver.

  1. Interview on 'application material' - asking the students' questions about their personal statement, or an essay they will submit as part of their application

  2. Interview on 'unseen material' - asking the students' questions on an article, study, or research paper they have not seen before, testing how they handle new material

SAMPLE Resources

Below you can access a folder of resources for conducting Economics interviews:

  1. Interview on application material - you can see a sample personal statement, highlighted with examples of questions which could be asked

  2. Interview on unseen material - you can see examples of articles which have previously been given to students, along with questions

These resources are intended for inspiration - to give you an idea of the level, length and themes of the material we use in our practice interviews. However, should you wish to use this material in the practice interviews you deliver, just let us know so we can make sure returning students haven't seen it before!

Meet one of our VOLUNTEER INTERVIEWERS: DILVIR

Dilvir graduated from Oxford University with an MEng in Engineering, Economics and Management.

Since then, he has begun his own business, and will soon be joining OC&C Strategy Consultants as an Associate Consultant.

"I volunteer as a mock interviewer with OxFizz to help break down the barriers of applying to OxFizz, and to support young people achieve their potential. My advice to the students I support in mock interviews is to persevere when they're faced with difficult questions. As an interviewer I always look to get the best out of my students"
